Skyclock iOS FAQ

Allowing 'Location Services'

The first time you open Skyclock after downloading from the app store you will be asked to 'allow' Location Services for the app. You should accept. Skyclock needs the ability to determine the location of the device (iPhone, iPad, Touch) in order to correctly display sunrise/set and twilight times. If you decline by mistake, you can easily remedy this on your device by going to Settings, and then pressing Locations Services. Make sure Locations Services is turned on at the top. Then scroll down the app list until you see Skyclock, and set to ON.

What is the 'GMT Offset' on the Settings Page?

This refers to how many hours removed you are (at your current location) from the common time standard of Greenwich Mean Time. GMT does not observe Daylight Saving Time (also called Summer Time Change). Therefore, your GMT Offset will change if you are in an area that implements Daylight Saving Time, or Summer Time change.  Skyclock automatically detects this change prior to displaying it's results.

Will Skyclock work if there is no GPS connection?

The location service in the iPhone will use the information that is available to determine the app display. It will use GPS, cell tower coordination, or wi-fi location. If you are using Skyclock on an iPod Touch, wi-fi location is the only service available. Therefore, if your Touch is not detecting a wi-fi connection, it will not display current data. This applies also to using Skyclock on an iPad (in iPhone mode) if not connected to a cell network.

Can Skyclock show a twilight display for a location other than my current location?

Skyclock for the iPhone does not have this display currently. At Skyclock.com, you can learn about and purchase a version of Skyclock for the pc that does have this capability. This is contemplated for a future i-Phone Skyclock upgrade..

Can Skyclock show a twilight display for a date other than the current date?

Skyclock for the iPhone does not currently have this display. Thid feature is being strongly contemplated for a future version.

Is Skyclock available on other mobile devices?

The iPhone is our first mobile device entry and we are very excited about it. We are actively engaged in further development, and are always interested in hearing from potential partners.

How does Skyclock work?

Skyclock shows relative specific solar time. That is, using the current date, sunrise and sunset times, and a specific location, Skyclock calculates and displays daylight, slice-of-pie twilight, and night.

Sunrise and sunset times are based on calculations, or algorithms, that result in a large set of tables. The facts have been checked for hundreds, if not thousands of years, going back to the Egyptians, who had a 365 day calendar.

We know when sunset occurs for a specific place on a certain date. Our ancestors watched and marked and measured, so that today we can predict where the sun is—we know its hour angle for any place if we know the date. What we know is transient, or dynamic, because the earth’s surface is in constant motion. Four solid facts combine to inform when sunset and sunrise occur:

Twilight is then displayed as a distinct pie-shape on an analog face between blue (day) and black (night).

Is there any information about the moon or phases of the moon on Skyclock?

No. Skyclock is based on solar events and positions.

Where does all the information in Skyclock about sunrise and sunset times come from?

The algorithms in Skyclock have been informed by the U. S. Naval Observatory and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. Skyclock then uses the latitude, longitude and time zone for the desired location and transforms the position of the sun to a graphic display on an analog clock face.

What are the differences between astronomical, civil, and nautical twilight times?

Astronomical, civil, and nautical twilight times are all defined by the position of the sun measured in degrees beyond the horizon of the Earth. Please see the Glossary for more complete explanations of these terms.
